New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics

Gifts

Food Platter – Former Judge

Opinion 15-122

Background: The inquiring full-time judge asked if he may allow a former judge, who appears as a lawyer before him, to give the judge and his staff a food platter. Alternatively, he asked if he may accept the food platter as a gift from the local bar association.

Opinion: The Committee concluded that a judge may not accept a gift of a food platter from a former judge, now practicing in the judge’s court, or from a bar group on the former judge’s behalf.
