GRAWA President’s Message: GRAWA’S annual day of community service

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”

Inspired by Dr. King and his legacy, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act in 1994, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the president’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

Several years ago, GRAWA’s Diversity Committee organized efforts for GRAWA members to participate in the MLK Day of Service. This has now become an annual event. Over the years, GRAWA members have participated in events with Foodlink and other local community service organizations to provide services in the Rochester area. This year, GRAWA will be participating again, with activities including providing breakfast for indigent community members and assembling care packages for a community organization with which GRAWA has been partnering for some time, Wilson Commencement Park. If you would like more information, please visit the GRAWA website at www.grawa.org.

Even if you do not participate in GRAWA’s Day of Community Service efforts, please consider participating in the MLK Day of Service in some other way. As Winston Churchill once said: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

And thank you to GRAWA’s Diversity Chair, Destini Bowman, and the Diversity Committee for planning GRAWA’s efforts this year and for continuing this tradition.
