NYS Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics – Personal relationship with law professors: Opinion 17-92

New York State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics

Personal relationship with law professors

Student practice order

Opinion 17-92

Background: The inquiring judge maintains friendships with two law professors that teach in a clinic that assigns students to work with a legal services organization on cases that may come before the judge.

Opinion: The Committee concluded that the judge is disqualified, subject to remittal, when a law student who appears before him pursuant to a student practice order is directly supervised by an attorney with whom the judge maintains a close personal relationship.
