Bar Association of Erie County
Years in current role: 3.5
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I, along with my colleagues, have the opportunity every day to engage in impactful work, programs that forge change in the community and in the legal profession. I enjoy working closely with our members. Attorneys have a unique bond and take seriously their duty to their clients, each other, and the public. We are fortunate to have a close and collegial bar in Erie County. I am proud and happy to be part of that community.
And I can bring my Aussie, Scout, to work with me!
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?
We had to pivot quickly to a new way of operating to meet the needs of our members. We worked hard to maintain warmth and fun amidst the stress and “technological take over” of our operations. We will come out of the pandemic stronger than ever before. I have a great staff and wonderful leadership that rose to meet the challenge.
What advice would you give law students who are graduating this year?
My advice for new lawyers is that the relationships you make today will matter more tomorrow than you realize in this busy moment of 2021. The lawyers you meet today will eventually be your future clients and possibly your employer. Take the time to get to know people, in your workplace, school, bar association and neighborhood. Relationships matter more than you know, and you will distinguish yourself by having good relationships. It is important to have outstanding legal skills but superior skills alone do not result in a career that is challenging, balanced and a source of contentment. Finally, especially now, do not be afraid to call people and ask for help. People want to help you. Be specific about what you need and always thank people.
What are you most looking forward to doing as COVID restrictions ease?
Seeing folks in person that have been a face on Zoom for over a year. Seeing the Boston Bruins play live, the return of the Allentown Arts Festival, and swimming somewhere warm and sunny. Watching the Bills win the Super Bowl with friends and family all in the same room.
