Monroe County District Attorney

Monroe County District Attorney’s Office

Years in current role: 9

What do you enjoy most about your role?

As the District Attorney, and as a prosecutor for nearly 30 years, what I enjoy the most is finding justice in each case. Justice for victims, the community and the defendants. The word justice has a different meaning for each circumstance. Justice can mean prosecution to the fullest extent, justice can mean financial restitution or justice can even mean counseling and dismissals. Searching for justice is the reason I am a prosecutor.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?

The biggest challenge I have faced in the past year is navigating the pandemic on behalf of the District Attorney’s Office and as President of the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York. It was my responsibility to ensure that we continued to work on all of our cases and serve the community when court appearances were canceled. I also worked with my colleagues at the state level to advocate for prosecutors when facing constant executive orders. I am proud of the work of my office and the work of prosecutors across the entire state of New York for the way we managed during these difficult and confusing times.

What advice would you give law students who are graduating this year?

To law students who are graduating this year, stay focused, continue to work hard and most importantly, be optimistic! You have gone through law school during difficult times with much uncertainty. I have complete faith that there is a place in the incredible field for all of you. I also urge you to consider public service. While it may not be the most attractive field, District Attorney’s Offices and Public Defender’s Offices inspire passion, camaraderie and the work you do will serve your community.

What are you most looking forward to doing as COVID restrictions ease?

As COVID restrictions ease, I am looking forward to spending more time in our community. I miss speaking with local groups and attending the wonderful festivals and activities our area has to offer. My Assistant District Attorneys and I are all ready to begin jury trials and help move the wheels of justice once again.
