Years in current role: 17

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

I think my biggest success over the past year has been serving as the president of the Monroe County Bar Association, while maintaining my small firm practice. The MCBA has been a big part of my professional life since I first became a lawyer, and I am grateful for all it has given me through the years. I’ve met most of my professional friends through the MCBA, and it meant a great deal to me to be able to lead the organization for the past year.

What are your expectations for the rest of this year?

After a successful first half of the year, my plan for the second half of the year is to take stock of things and think about new strategic efforts for our firm in the future. At the same time, it’s my sincere hope that we will all continue to return to some sense of normalcy with more opportunities for in-person professional gatherings. I miss them.

What advice would you give someone starting a personal injury law practice right now?

When you’re starting any business (and especially a personal injury practice), I think it’s important to have three particular people in your corner: 1) a good banker to help you with financing and working through cash flow issues; 2) an accountant that you trust to help you with financial strategies and taxes; and 3) a compassionate primary care physician to help you deal with all of the stress you’re going to face. Having a partner is also key as it’s important to know that someone has your back.

If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?

One area of the law that I’d be interested in practicing if I wasn’t a personal injury lawyer would be estate planning. I really enjoy counseling clients — it’s one of the things I love most about being an injury lawyer. I also really enjoy working through financial issues for our clients. It seems to me that helping people plan their estates would involve both of these interests.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

One personal goal that I have for the next year is trying to achieve a better work-life balance. I think the stresses of COVID have caused us all to work overtime out of a fear that it all might come crashing down on us. It’s time for all of us to take a minute to breathe and have some fun.
