Jeffrey M. JohnstoneJeffrey M. Johnstone

Of Counsel, Tully Rinckey PLLC

Years in current role: 4 months, 3.5 years with firm

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

The most rewarding case for me during the past year involved enabling a mother to obtain a death certificate for her missing son after he was exposed to a life-threatening event from which his body was never recovered. There have been only three similar cases in Monroe County during the past 100 years.

What are your expectations for the rest of this year?

COVID will continue to impact the manner in which we provide legal services. Client contacts and court appearances will continue to be conducted remotely. In-person meetings with clients will be infrequent, except for such matters as executions of Wills and Powers of Attorney.

What advice would you give someone starting a trusts and estates practice right now?

Listen carefully and patiently to your clients. You can learn something worthwhile from everyone. Don’t be discouraged when you discover gaps in your legal education, knowledge or experience. Strive to learn something new every day.

If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?

In my early career I had an opportunity to work in a number of areas of legal practice, and I believe that experience has broadened my perspective and made me a better lawyer. However, at this time there is no one area that I can think of that I would prefer to Trusts and Estates.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

To devote my energies to helping those clients who can best benefit from my assistance.
