Partner, Chair, Trusts & Estates Department, Underberg & Kessler LLP

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

My biggest success over the past year has been overseeing and managing the growth of the Trusts & Estates Department at Underberg & Kessler LLP while at the same time continuing to provide excellent service to both my estate planning and estate administration clients.

What are your expectations for the rest of this year?

My expectations for the rest of 2022 are to continue to assist both existing and new clients with their estate planning and estate administration needs as expeditiously as possible, while obtaining excellent results for them.

What advice would you give someone starting a trusts and estates practice right now?

The trusts and estate practice area is ever-changing, and most planning strategies are dependent upon current legislation as well as legal precedent. As a result, attorneys must both stay current with the law and at the same time attempt to anticipate any new developments in order to provide sound legal guidance. In that regard, my advice to someone starting a trusts and estates practice right now is to understand the complexities of the practice area and to the extent possible, find an attorney who has a successful estate planning practice and is willing to act as a mentor who can provide practical and substantive advice, as well as possibly act as co-counsel in the beginning stages of your practice.

If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?

Practicing in the estate planning and estate administration areas for the entirety of my career has afforded me the unique opportunity to practice in other areas of law that many times go hand-in-hand with estate planning/estate administration, such as tax law (I have a LL.M in Taxation from Villanova), elder care law, various types of litigation, and corporate law to name a few. One area of law that I’ve never practiced in is criminal defense. I’ve always found the case law very engrossing and interesting to follow.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

One personal goal I have is to continue to expand the firm’s Trusts & Estates Department. The firm continues to grow at a steady pace and with that growth, there is a greater demand to provide expert firmwide estate planning and estate administration services to our clients.
