Philip L. BurkePhilip L. Burke

Partner, Chair of Family Wealth & Estate Planning Department, Woods Oviatt Gilman LLP

Years in current role: 3 as department chair, 30-plus as partner

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

Helping department attorneys and staff negotiate the fallout from the pandemic — working remotely, virtual client meets, etc.

What are your expectations for the rest of this year?

Hoping for a return to “normal” with face-to-face meetings, department fully staffed and in the office (with some accommodation made for those wishing to work remotely), etc.

What advice would you give someone starting a trusts and estates practice right now?

Recognize the importance of this type of work going forward. The aging population and the amount of wealth being transferred to the next generation increases the need for these services.

If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?

Possibly Intellectual Property. I’ve always been fascinated with the development and protection of scientific discoveries and trademarked/copyrighted works.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

Stay the course, remain in good health.
