Partner, Intellectual Practice Team Co-Leader and Securities Practice Team Co-Leader, Lippes Mathias LLP
Years in current role: 15
What are your expectations for the rest of this year?
The balance of the year is difficult to predict with so many conflicting indicators of future economic conditions. However, if similar, past declines in the economy are a barometer, we should expect to see continued gradual reduction of economic activity with intellectual property activity similarly reducing as business startups decline and larger companies tighten their budgets.
What advice would you give someone starting an intellectual property practice right now?
I believe there are many opportunities to differentiate in terms of legal service delivery and communication. These are key to developing a strong reputation and obtaining new clients. Aspects of intellectual property change quickly so it is important to stay aware of possible changes in law such as the different versions of a federal privacy law now being worked on.
If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?
I have done very little litigation and that is an area that has always interested me. Understanding how matters arise and are addressed in litigation can wield large advantages in structuring transactions and drafting documents to those dealing with intellectual property issues.
What is one personal goal you have for the next year?
Continue providing excellent advice and service to our clients, while continuing to grow our practice in intellectual property.
