A military veteran with nearly 50 years of experience practicing law, Duncan D. O’Dwyer said he uses his networking skills to connect lawyers in his firm with opportunities, and his management skills to teach the firm’s lawyers to remain accountable.
O’Dwyer has spent half of his career as managing partner at Forsyth, Howe, O’Dwyer, Kalb & Murphy in Rochester, and considers his role in helping to hire more than 1,000 employees—and mentoring them throughout their careers—to be his most significant accomplishment.
O’Dwyer, whose legal expertise is in real estate, mortgage banking and tax certiorari proceedings, said a model lawyer is courteous, fully prepares for cases, responds promptly to client needs and has “an ethical lamp that never extinguishes.”
He added, “If you have that, you will always understand what you should be doing and when to do it. That’s the long-term program—if you do that you will be practicing (law) for a very long time.”
O’Dwyer’s service includes work on the board of trustees at Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeastern Seminary.
New York State Supreme Court Judge Hon. Thomas A. Stander wrote: “In each setting, Duncan O’Dwyer has demonstrated intellectual advocacy at the highest professional level. Importantly, Duncan uses his considerable talents to benefit not only his clients, but to a very great extent, the Monroe County Bar Association, the Monroe County Bar Foundation, and his pro bono representation of those in need through VLSP.”
O’Dwyer said his commitment stems from lessons learned in the Army, and as a JAG and reserve officer.
“I learned a lot about management–management up and management down,” he said. “The people that work for you, you have a responsibility to look after them, and make sure they know what’s expected of them. (Managing) up, you have to make sure you’re providing the best service you possibly can.”
