Genesee County to ring bells to mark Civil War’s start

The Associated Press//April 8, 2011//

BATAVIA — The historian for a western New York county that lost 274 men in the Civil War hopes bells throughout the county will be rung next week to mark the 150th anniversary of conflict’s start.

Historian Sue Conklin tells the Daily News of Batavia that the bell in the old county courthouse in Batavia will be rung for two minutes Tuesday, 150 years to the day when Confederate troops opened fire on Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

Conklin says local historic groups have asked all schools, churches and governments in the county to ring bells beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

A local Civil War Commemoration Committee has been formed to plan various events marking the conflict’s anniversaries over the next four years.
