What do you enjoy most about practicing intellectual property law?
I get to collaborate with so many innovative companies, universities, and individuals as they work to develop and protect amazing technologies. I especially enjoy working with our health science clients as they develop so many live-saving technologies. We do a great deal of work in the vaccine area, which as you can imagine has become ever more important. The clients we help are great and the work we do is interesting, challenging and important.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?
COVID has been the No. 1 challenge. Many law firms have had to move to a remote work structure and my firm is no different. The loss of personal interaction and the opportunity to do in-person mentoring of more junior team members has been a real challenge for me. The interesting thing is how well our team and my practice have adapted to this new environment. We have been able to continue to meet client needs effectively despite all these challenges. My practice has stayed busy throughout COVID, which has made the challenge even greater. I am so impressed with our team and how they have risen to the challenge.
What do you see as the biggest changes in the legal industry in the next 3-5 years?
Remote work and what that means for the legal industry. Increasingly, legal professionals in our market are getting offers to work remotely for major market firms. This is posing a challenge to keep and build talent. This is a big change for the legal industry, where being in the office and in-person interactions have traditionally been assumed critical to practicing law. That is starting to change, which is a big transformation. It’s a new frontier for many law firms.
What community organizations do you support as a volunteer and why?
I have served on the Board of Compeer and I have participated in many fundraisers for FoodLink. I am also a Knight of Columbus and I participate in many volunteer and charity projects for the Knights.
What are you most looking forward to doing as COVID restrictions ease?
Being able to get on the road and see clients and colleagues in-person.
