Federal judiciary releases caseload data

The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts released its most recent report on caseload information this week. The report reflects the work of federal appellate, district and bankruptcy courts, as well as the federal probation and pretrial system in categorized data for the year ending June 30.

Regionally, the Second Circuit received a total of 5,371 , down from 5,747 in 2009 and continuing a downward trend (the Second Circuit received 7,035 filings in 2005). Appellate filings nationally decreased by 5.6 percent over 2009 figures and decreased nearly 18 percent in the past five years.

The U.S. District Court, Western District of New York received a total of 2,882 filings in 2010, including 1,854 civil filings, 560 criminal filings and 468 transfers. The figures reflect a slight increase over 2009.

Nationally, district court case filings rose 10.9 percent to 285,215. The report is available online at www.uscourts.gov.
