Senate Democrats to unveil bail reform proposal

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Democratic members of the New York state Senate plan to release a proposal to change the state’s bail system in an effort to make it more fair.
The lawmakers say they’ll announce the details of their legislation Tuesday in the state Capitol in Albany.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has already unveiled his own proposal to end the practice of requiring criminal defendants to post monetary bail in misdemeanor and non-violent felony cases.
Supporters say requiring monetary bail is inherently unfair since it allows suspects with financial resources to go free while those without must wait in jail until their trials begin.
Cuomo is proposing instead to release those defendants on their own recognizance or require them to check in with officials.
