‘Law Week’ events planned by Bar Association

Daily Record Staff//April 13, 2018//

The Monroe County Bar Association’s year’s celebration will take place over the course of a week this year. The “Law Week” celebration will have a past, present and future theme.

The “past” theme will be embodied in a Law Day CLE program on May 2.  The program will focus on three cases commenced in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York that were litigated in the United States Supreme Court and led to important constitutional precedent.

All three cases feature interesting local connections. Chief U.S District Court Judge Frank P. Geraci Jr. and John Q. Barrett, a law professor at St. Johns University School of Law, will present the CLE scheduled for 12:15 p.m. on May 2.

The “present” theme will be embodied in a pro bono law clinic co-sponsored by the Young Lawyers Section of the Bar Association and Lifespan from 1 to 6 p.m. on May 3 at Lifespan’s headquarters, 1900 S. Clinton Ave.

The purpose of the clinic will be to prepare wills and end-of-life documents for veterans and low-income members of the Greater Rochester community.  Attorney volunteers will receive training by trusts and estates attorneys and receive CLE credit for participating.

Attorneys interested in learning more about participating should contact Katerina Kramarchyk ([email protected]) or Michael Geraci ([email protected]).

The “future” theme will be embodied in a student awards ceremony on April 30 at the Telesca Center for Justice, with state Supreme Court Justice Joanne Winslow, a justice of the Appellate Division, Fourth Department.

The ceremony will honor high school students who participate in the Sydney R. Rubin Mock Trial Competition, Law Explorers Mock Trial Competition and Rochester Teen Court. The finals for the Sydney R. Rubin Mock Trial Competition were held last month with Hilton High School as the winning team.

The Law Explorers finals will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., April 28, at the Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building, 100 State St.

Attorneys interested in offering feedback to participants should contact Michael Rooney ([email protected]).
