Partner, Chair of Real Estate Department, Boylan Code, LLP

Years in current role: 22

What do you enjoy most about practicing real estate law?

I have been fortunate to have worked with some of the best attorneys in Rochester over my career, mainly in the firms of Nixon Hargrave (now Nixon Peabody), Phillips Lytle and for the last 22 years, Boylan Code. I have also had the good fortune of representing real estate clients who are developers, corporations, retailers and lenders that have given me the opportunity to work on interesting and challenging real estate matters. I have always enjoyed working with our clients to find a creative and beneficial outcome to their matters.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?

I am a firm believer in having a collegial and collaborative work environment. In the past year, we have concentrated on building a strong and diversified real estate department. We have been successful in bringing together an extremely strong paralegal staff to support the efforts of our attorneys (perhaps the best in Rochester), and while we have been successful in adding quality attorneys, we are continuing our efforts to recruit additional attorneys who satisfy our criteria and who are capable under my mentorship to lead this real estate department into the future.

What community organizations do you support as a volunteer and why?

I was one the founders and original board members of CDS Life Transitions, which has become one of the largest and most successful nonprofits in the Rochester area. Its mission at that time was to provide services and housing to people with developmental disabilities. I am currently on the board and treasurer of Joseph Avenue Arts and Culture Alliance, which is dedicated to both preserving a historic synagogue building on Joseph Avenue in the city and providing a performing arts center for the residents of the northeast quadrant of the city, mainly for the children since it is established that exposure to the arts enhances the educational opportunities for and performance of students.
