Years in current role: 16 as Partner; 6 as Labor & Employment Practice Group Leader

What do you enjoy most about practicing labor and employment law?

The truly enjoyable part of my profession is digging in and getting to know a client and their business and identifying how I can make a meaningful difference for them, whether I am serving as a counselor or as a litigator. In my counseling role, it is very fulfilling to me when I can clearly and concisely explain the applicable law and then collaborate with the client to avoid risk, further conflict, or litigation. When I am wearing my litigator hat, I definitely enjoy the “heat of the battle.” There is nothing better than strategizing to help the client achieve a cost-effective, favorable result.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?

I believe that personal interaction is extremely important on many different levels professionally. Whether meeting a client for the first time, negotiating at the bargaining table, taking a deposition, arguing a case before a judge or an arbitrator, or teaming with colleagues in a practice group meeting, there is simply no substitute for face-to-face contact. As we all managed the second year of the pandemic, especially the surge in the fall and winter, the need for remote interaction more often than not was particularly challenging. I hope for an end to the pandemic and a return to “normal” as soon as possible.

What is one personal goal you have for the next year?

We have a very talented group of labor and employment attorneys at my firm who are collegial and collaborative, and who take tremendous pride in their work. My personal goal is to lead effectively that team in developing and initiating our three-year strategic plan.
