Jared Lusk
Office Managing Partner for Rochester and Buffalo, Nixon Peabody LLP
Years in current role: 6
What has been your biggest success over the past year?
In my own practice, I’ve closed several transactions that are having a positive impact on our region. Much of this client work has been related to the wireless telecommunications infrastructure, renewable energy, and agribusiness industries. I find it rewarding to work on projects that connect communities to the latest technology. During the past year, our firm also brought back several attorneys who were with Nixon Peabody earlier in their careers. We are always opportunistic about bringing in talented people, and these “boomerang” attorneys validate that our firm is a great place to work.
What are your expectations for the next 6-12 months?
Many of our clients continue to experience challenges of supply chain constraints, rising interest rates, and inflation. We’ve seen reports that inflation is gradually slowing, and that would be a very welcome sign for businesses of all types and sizes as well as families and individuals. Legally speaking, renewable energy and wireless infrastructure remain at the forefront this year.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in real estate law?
Lawyers who are just starting out in real estate law have such a wide selection of practice areas to choose from. For their first few years in practice, I would encourage junior lawyers to experience as many of these as possible before concentrating on a particular area. It can help identify where professional passions reside, and also help uncover professional strengths that an individual wasn’t previously aware of. Keep an open mind. Opportunities will arise where and when you least expect it.
If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?
Sports agency. Every time the free agency period opens, it must be wild. I am pretty sure my best clients would sign with the Bills, Sabres, and Yankees.
What do you enjoy most about practicing law in the Rochester area?
Our region has historically delivered world-class services and products around the globe — and continues to do so. While those products and services have evolved dramatically over the past century, Rochester remains a hotbed for technology and innovation. As a lawyer here, I’m able to work with many of these businesses to help achieve their goals, and that’s exciting. It’s also not uncommon to encounter counsel who are/have been “across the table” from me on a transaction around town. I enjoy the collegial relationships we have with each other.
