John M. Scatigno

Partner, Trevett Cristo

Years in current role: 2

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

I have been practicing law for over 31 years and after spending 28 of them in private practice I joined Trevett Cristo in December 2021 as a Partner concentrating my practice in Residential and Commercial Real Estate. While I expected the move to be a big adjustment, the attorneys and staff at Trevett Cristo welcomed me and made my integration seamless. I was able to bring my skillset and experience to Trevett Cristo and believe I have made a meaningful contribution to the firm. I am so proud to be a part of the Trevett Cristo family and work alongside such a wonderful team.

What advice would you give someone just starting out in real estate law?

I would suggest they build a strong foundation in the law and stay current on updates and developments that effect their residential and commercial clients. Additionally, they must develop strong communication skills as they will be working closely with their clients, other attorneys, real estate agents, mortgage brokers, property inspectors, and accountants to name a few. It is important that they be available to the professionals involved and that they keep in contact with their clients to provide guidance and answer questions in easy-to-understand terms. As real estate is a referral-based business, building relationships is a must in building your real estate practice.

What do you enjoy most about practicing law in the Rochester area?

I grew up in Somers, New York (Westchester County) and moved to Rochester in 1991. For someone who was not born or raised here, I really appreciate the friendliness and welcoming nature of this community. I have made so many friends through my practice and that has made my work so enjoyable and rewarding.
