What changes in the legal industry do you believe will have the biggest impact on clients over the next few years?

I think it would be hard to argue that AI isn’t the answer here. I’m not sure anyone knows the complete impact that AI will have on law practice at this stage. My hope is only that incorporating AI will allow us more time to focus on the human element of what we do: connecting with clients and focusing on what is important to them.

How do you balance legal expertise with client service and relationship-building?

T&E is a technical practice with complex tax concepts and insider jargon, from QTIPs and IDGTs to SLATs, which can feel impenetrable to clients. I’ve found that the more comfortable I’ve gotten with the complexity, the more I’ve become able to discuss these concepts with clients without using overly technical language. This allows more time in the conversation to focus on the client’s own decision points and what is important to the client, which I think helps build closer relationships.

What is one accomplishment — professional or personal — that you are especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of our T&E group at Harter Secrest & Emery. Among our lawyers, paralegals and staff, we have a range of experiences and skill sets. Working together, we’ve cultivated a highly communicative and team-oriented environment.
