Sen. Ensign opposing Kagan for high court

RENO, Nev. — Sen. John Ensign says he will vote against the confirmation of Elena Kagan’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Nevada Republican cited what he called Kagan’s lack of support for the U.S. military and “demonstrated hostility” toward constitutionally protected gun rights.

Ensign says the solicitor general dishonored the military when she barred recruiters from the Harvard Law School campus. He says he was impressed with her intellect and accomplishments when he met with her earlier this week. But he fears she will be a liberal, judicial activist if she serves on the nation’s highest court.

So far, only three Republican senators have said they will vote for Kagan — Richard Lugar of Indiana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine.

Nevada Democrat Harry Reid supports her.
