Managing Partner/Chair of Real Estate & Finance Practice Group, Underberg & Kessler LLP
Years in current role: Newly elected Managing Partner (29 as Partner)
What has been your biggest challenge over the past year?
A significant issue currently facing the Rochester region is the lack of affordable housing. It is nearly impossible to purchase a home or rent an apartment at a reasonable rate. I am a member of the local housing initiative panel which has been charged with finding solutions for the shortage. We have found the most challenging aspect is educating the public and our elected officials concerning the various causes creating the need. These causes include zoning laws which drive up the cost of construction or create barriers to the construction of multi-family housing or accessory dwelling units. Additionally, tax incentives for first-time homeowners or incentives which encourage investors to sell their portfolio will help. I am hopeful that our group will succeed in this challenge.
What are you most excited about for the coming year?
This year, I am most excited about my firm’s expansion plans and growing our various practice areas. I enjoy discussing career opportunities with talented folks in the legal industry and the benefits of joining our team.
What is your favorite thing about the Rochester region?
It is nearly impossible to come up with one favorite item about the Rochester region. You could select the fantastic arts, including our theater and music scene. Another most-liked item would be all of our great restaurants, breweries and vineyards. It is possible to prefer the wonderful year-round outdoor activities including festivals, water activities on Irondequoit Bay or Lake Ontario or hiking in one of many parks. Sports are also a highlight, whether cheering on our local teams or traveling down the Thruway to become part of Bills mafia. If I must pick one favorite thing about the Rochester region, I would choose its friendly people. I am not originally from Rochester, but I have always felt welcome here.
