What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?
I always try to stay on top of the way both federal and state courts are handling issues relating to e-discovery, because this is such a critical topic in commercial litigation, and is constantly evolving as we conduct more and more business through electronic mediums, and new and different programs and applications are consistently being introduced. The ESI in a case can often be a game-changer, both from a substantive and cost perspective.
What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?
New attorneys should try and get practical, hands-on experience as soon as possible, and pro bono representation can often provide the opportunity to do that while also allowing attorneys to perform an important and much-needed service for communities in need. One other tip for new litigators in particular, especially in the age of instantaneous legal search results and ever-more-frequent use of AI, is to make sure to read and analyze every case or authority you cite in full, so you don’t give your opponent the opportunity to use your own authority against you or accuse you of mischaracterizing.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?
My family and I love being outdoors in the Finger Lakes, and we enjoy nothing better than hiking and camping in our beautiful region.
