Attorney
McConville Considine Cooman & Morin, P.C.
Years in current role: 43 at this firm; 50 years as a lawyer
What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?
In addition to the “Rs”? New practitioners must not only keep up with today’s technology and education (CLE), but also keep reminding themselves that people skills matter, especially in many areas of the legal profession. They should also seek out a mentor in their area of practice to guide them as they gain experience and comfort in being a lawyer. That is not only knowing the law, but, especially for sole or small firm practitioners, learning the business side of running a practice.
What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?
“Dirt law has been around forever and nothing much changes.” We have progressed from Medieval Times where a young child in the village or town was taken to the four corners of a property and told to memorize the location, to measurements by chains and links, to satellite imaging. Advances in technology and mapping now allow a surveyor to measure and plot properties from above within fractions. With accuracy comes issues and disputes. As values continue to escalate, we are seeing more ownership disputes. More times than not, if it is not able to be mutually resolved, one side will seek the court’s help to settle the matter.
How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?
Rochester and its surrounds are well suited not only for a place to live and practice law, but as an outstanding example of people helping people who are concerned about their community. I look back to my dad’s work in developing with then Mayor Tom Ryan the “Morin-Ryan Act,” which was just one example of the cooperation and concern our leaders have shown to make this a better place to live.
