The Albany-based Colwell Law Group LLC has expanded into the Rochester market with a new office in Pittsford.
The firm that specializes in family and matrimonial law is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and now has 14 total attorneys, including three in the new office: Michael Stivers, Izabel Yurovskiy, and Rija Khan.
“For 19 years, the Colwell Law Group has been dedicated to providing outstanding legal services to our clients, recruiting the best attorneys and staff, and expanding the firm’s reach to more and more people across the state,” said Mary Colwell, who co-founded the firm with her late-husband Kevin.
“This Rochester expansion is the latest example of our ongoing commitment to helping New Yorkers wherever they live,” she said.
Kevin Colwell died on Feb. 8 in a skiing accident at Gore Mountain in Warren County.
“While we mourn Kevin’s tragic passing, we are committed to carrying on his legacy,” said Colwell.
“I want to assure our clients, partners and the broader community that the vision Kevin and I shared, and the outstanding leadership team we built, will guide our firm for many years to come,” she said.
On Wednesday, the firm celebrated its latest expansion at the new location — 1241 Pittsford-Victor Road — with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that included Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bob Duffy.

With offices in Albany, Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, and now Rochester, the firm offers a wide range of services for clients navigating complex family and matrimonial legal challenges, from divorce and child custody matters to asset distribution and spousal support.
And Colwell is looking forward to continued growth.
“In the long term we certainly have a vision of continuing to expand. The specific localities aren’t defined yet,” she said.
“We were thinking about locations that made sense, and locations that could benefit from the level of compassion and expertise that we would be able to provide them,” she said.
“We do our research. We look at the demographics. We look at the filings. We look at the diverse population and range of backgrounds that Rochester had,” she said.
“It really appeared to be a local market with a demand for a client-centered firm with a reputation for bringing excellence and compassion,” she said.
“The expansion out west just makes sense … It just seemed like Rochester was the right place,” Colwell said.
