Effective Monday, the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo’s Criminal Defense Unit (CDU) entered the second phase of a major expansion of indigent defense services in Erie County by significantly increasing services of mandated legal representation for individuals facing criminal charges.
The CDU has broadened its scope of representation in Buffalo City Court, where it will now handle all cases up to Class B violent felonies.
The CDU also will also assume responsibility for providing mandated representation in the town of Cheektowaga Court for the first time.
Under this new role, the CDU will represent indigent individuals charged with all misdemeanors and all felonies up to Class B violent felonies in Cheektowaga.
To support the expansion, the Criminal Defense Unit has increased staffing levels with the support of New York State’s Office of Indigent Legal Services (ILS), including the addition of a new supervising attorney dedicated to the Cheektowaga court.
Initially, four staff attorneys will be assigned to the court, supported by social workers and client advocates.
