David C. Schopp retiring as executive director of Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo

David C. Schopp, executive director of the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, is retiring.

Nadine E. Patterson, deputy executive director of civil practice since 2021, will assume the role of executive director on April 1.

Under Schopp’s leadership, the bureau has been recognized for its commitment to client-centered representation and defender advocacy. His contributions have been acknowledged with multiple awards, reflecting his impact on both state and national levels.

“It has been a privilege to serve and witness the growth of our organization. I am proud of our accomplishments and confident in Nadine Patterson’s ability to lead the Bureau into its next chapter,” Schopp stated in a news release.

Patterson’s appointment comes after an exhaustive, nationwide search, which began in 2025.

“I am honored to follow in David’s footsteps and continue the legacy of providing essential legal services to our community. All of us at Legal Aid are looking forward to building on the strong foundation laid by David,” she stated.
