How do you balance legal expertise with client service and relationship-building?

Once a client identifies their business goals and strategy, it is your job, as their attorney, to assist them in navigating the myriad applicable laws and regulations, mitigate risk, and provide legal support that allows them to effectively operate their business, with minimum disruption. Trust is earned. Clients may not always like what I have to say, however, they can trust that I’ve given their issues due consideration, considered multiple perspectives and potential strategies, that I am not simply telling them what they want to hear, and that I am acting in their best interest.

How important is community involvement or pro bono work within your organization?

Active community engagement and pro bono work are cornerstones of The Phillips Lytle Way. They allow our attorneys to better understand local needs, amplify our impact on the communities we live in, and help close the access-to-justice gap.

What is one accomplishment — professional or personal — that you are especially proud of?

To keep life interesting, I always have side quests. At different intervals those quests change. In the past, they have included marathons, martial arts, languages, gardening, reading the classics, and musical instruments. My current dominating goal (outside of work) is to visit all seven continents. This year I will be heading to Africa to visit eight countries. I am not sure proud is the right word, however, I am super excited.
