Niagara Power to get $460M upgrade

The Associated Press//June 30, 2010//

BUFFALO — The New York Power Authority has approved a $460 million upgrade to the largest power producer in the state.

The public authority on Tuesday approved a plan that will renovate and modernize it’s Lewiston Pump Generating Plant, located just north of . The facility is a key component of the authority’s Niagara Power Project, which produces about 8 percent of the power generated in the state.

Power Authority officials say the 10-year plan will improve the efficiency of the pump station and slightly boost the overall generating capacity of the Niagara Power Project at times when demand for electricity is highest.

The authority runs power plants, including hydroelectric facilities at Niagara Falls and in St. Lawrence County in northern New York.
