Former Niagara Falls mayor gets 13-month sentence

The Associated Press//December 20, 2010//

BUFFALO — Former Mayor Vince Anello has been sentenced to 13 months in prison for filing with his electrical workers’ union.

A federal court judge in Buffalo also ordered Anello on Monday to pay about $55,000 in restitution.

The 64-year-old Anello, who was mayor from 2004 to 2007, admitted underreporting hours he’d worked as an electrician after he left office, resulting in pension payments he wasn’t entitled to. Retirees may work only limited hours to keep the benefits.

In exchange for his guilty plea in September, prosecutors dropped public corruption charges stemming from $40,000 Anello accepted from a businessman during and after his mayoral campaign. A city lease was awarded to the businessman during his term in office.
