ID theft remains FTC’s top consumer complaint

For the 11th year in a row, identity theft was the most frequent consumer complaint received by the Federal Trade Commission, according to the latest data released by the agency.

The more than 250,000 identify theft reports received by the agency in 2010 constituted 19 percent of all consumer complaints, according to the data. The second highest complaint — — constituted 11 percent of all complaints, with more than 144,000 reports.

Also, for the first time, imposter scams made the Top Ten list of complaints. These complaints involve imposters posing as friends, family, respected companies or government agencies in an attempt to get consumers to send money. In response to the recent rise in these imposter scams, the issued a new consumer alert, “Spotting an Imposter,” to help consumers avoid such schemes.

The data is based on information contained in the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database of millions of consumer complaints available only to law enforcement.
