NY attorneys urge revision to campaign rule

The Associated Press//May 5, 2011//

ALBANY — are urging New York’s Administrative Board of the Courts to revise proposed rules that would prohibit assigning cases to a who has received significant campaign donations from lawyers, parties or law firms involved in the case.

Among 32 public comments, several lawyers and groups support measures meant to remove even the perception of judicial bias.

Some say such donations should be banned altogether.

A few say there’s no problem currently.

Many caution that firms could game the system by making donations to judges they want to avoid.

Judges would be prevented from hearing cases involving lawyers or parties who have given them $2,500 or more in campaign donations within the previous two years or $3,500 from multiple parties or from an attorney and his law firm.
