United Airlines has given notice that it will lay off 40 people at Greater Rochester International Airport in October and 42 more at the Albany airport.

The Chicago-based carrier outlined the plans in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed with the state labor department.

The notice indicates United is considering switching to an outside vendor for customer service and ramp operations.

A statement from the airline Tuesday says such decisions are difficult, but that it must continually look for ways to run a more efficient business.
