Easton Thompson Kasperek Shiffrin, LLP
Years in current role: 13
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Working side by side with my heroes in our socially accepted occupation and vocation of standing with David against the government Goliath which, fortuitously, is a perfect fit for our predispositions and passions. As Martin Luther said, “Here I stand, I can do no other.” My mother always thought I’d be involved in the criminal justice system, just not this way. This worked out better.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve dealt with over the past year?
We’re a litigation firm that, fish out of water-like, hasn’t had a trial in the past year, hasn’t been able to conduct hearings or investigations and hasn’t been able to move cases forward at all. In some cases, our clients sit in custody while their cases are not moving forward. So frustration and focus have been challenges.
What advice would you give law students who are graduating this year?
Clients come first. Work hard. It’s a profession, not a job. There’s no one better behind you; step up.
What are you most looking forward to doing as COVID restrictions ease?
Returning to nice restaurants, Red Sox and Tigers games, and the Little Theatre. Gathering with friends and, when it’s safe to do so and can be done while affording due process to the criminally accused (but not before), resuming jury trials.
