Meredith M.B. Lamb

Attorney, Lamb Law Offices

Years in current role: 15

What has been your biggest success over the past year?

What I would consider my biggest success in 2022 was the privilege of being involved in several complex assigned cases through the Ontario County Assigned Counsel Program, Monroe County Assigned Counsel Program, Attorney for the Children Program, and Monroe County Surrogate’s Court. I will be the first to admit that assigned cases are challenging. However, these cases provide me with the ability to continuously grow as an attorney in my practice area and as an advocate for my clients. In addition, our office moved in 2022, from the original downtown office in Rochester to 160 Linden Oaks.

What are your expectations for the next 6-12 months?

In the next year, I will be more present on various social media platforms to better connect with members of our community interested in learning more about Family Law. I understand Family Court can be an emotional and confusing experience for litigants. By using social media, I hope to provide practical tips that can put a positive spin on difficult circumstances.

What advice would you give someone starting out in family law right now?

Do not be afraid to go out on your own to run a successful law practice. An important thing to remember is to avoid superfluous costs that could potentially lead to debt. Join your local and state bar associations. There you will find many benefits, including: offering a space to meet with clients for free, free legal research, access to an online continuing legal education, and networking opportunities which may increase your practice. I would also advise every attorney to join a civic organization, such as the Lions Club, Rotary Club, American Legion. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

If you could practice one area of law that you haven’t practiced in your career, what would it be and why?

I am interested in learning about civil litigation in Federal Court. My interest in Federal Court civil litigation began in law school when I learned the federal rules of Evidence. I have a love/hate relationship for understanding the rules of hearsay. I memorized the definition of hearsay in law school which has stuck with me. When preparing clients to testify I frequently say the definition of hearsay. I can now say in four seconds, “hearsay” is “an out of court statement offered to prove the truth of the matter asserted.” Black’s Law Dictionary.

What do you enjoy most about the Rochester legal community?

There is collegiality and mutual respect among most family law attorneys within Monroe County and the Seventh Judicial District which is fantastic. I am blessed and fortunate to know many colleagues, any of whom I could call for advice on a case to learn from the other attorneys’ experiences for my benefit. It is a gift to be associated with so many knowledgeable attorneys within the legal community. I feel honored to provide advice to a colleague and to seek advice from my colleagues. This type of camaraderie makes practicing law more enjoyable.
