What do you enjoy most about your position?

Practicing law in the trusts and estates area requires skills beyond legal expertise. Helping clients plan for death and incapacity or understanding the process when a loved one dies requires a great deal of empathy and compassion. I also enjoy counseling clients regarding the non-legal issues surrounding an estate plan or administration, which sometimes can be a critical piece from the client’s perspective.

What are the biggest current challenges in trusts and estates law?

I’ve been handling trusts and estates matters for 25 years and have seen an increase in family conflict in settling estates. I also think that many individuals are named in a fiduciary capacity without having the proper guidance or understanding about the important role they may play in another person’s life, which can result in unnecessary litigation.

What do you enjoy most about practicing law in the Rochester area?

I have had the opportunity to handle matters in many counties throughout New York State and the level of camaraderie and civility with attorneys in the Rochester area cannot be beat. Also, no other Surrogate’s Court can compare to the level of professionalism, expertise and efficiency of the Monroe County Surrogate’s Court, which enhances the experience for all attorneys practicing law in the trusts and estates area here.
