Rochester Office Managing Partner, Chairman of criminal law practice area, Tully Rinckey PLLC
Years in current role: 10
What professional accomplishment have you been most proud of this year?
The Rochester Tully Rinckey office has added several new attorneys this year, and I am very happy with the growth of the office and the quality of their work. The new additions make us ready to take on a wide variety of clients and legal issues, and also help recruiting even more attorneys going forward. I was also very honored to be named by the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Vincent Lombardi Lodge, as their “Man of the Year.”
What do you think the biggest change in the legal industry will be over the next 3-5 years?
As technology improves, the changes that have taken place will accelerate: more virtual appearances and remote work. The law office as we once knew it is disappearing, and that will continue. I think we lose something valuable with this change, but it seems inevitable. The other major issue will be how much artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact the legal profession and whether this will begin replacing lawyers. The next 3-5 years will tell us much.
What are the most important skills lawyers need that they didn’t need 10-20 years ago?
Technology skills have been increasingly important in recent decades. However, for trial attorneys, a return to people skills may be essential. The skills required to try a case are something that computers can’t replace.
What is one thing you hope to accomplish before the end of next year?
I would like to continue the gains we made in 2023 and have even more attorneys in the Rochester Office. I also want to complete another triathlon: I did my first one in 2023 and look forward to going a little further (but probably not any faster).
What Rochester-area organizations do you support and why?
I continue to work for AIDS charities as part of my living memorial to my brother Patrick, who died of AIDS in 1991. I am involved with some of our local Italian-American organizations, particularly the Saint Nicholas Society in East Rochester and the Italian Civic League. And our firm’s bicycle team, the Tully Rinckey Riders, are active participants in the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure in Rochester, and the Ride for Roswell in Buffalo.
