What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?
We hear every day about how Artificial Intelligence ( “AI”) is influencing our daily lives. Our profession is immersed in the process of learning how AI impacts our clients and practices. AI presents commercial, strategic and ethical challenges that require study, training and planning. These technological changes require and deserve rapt attention and a commitment to our clients and firms.
What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?
When people hear the word litigation it conjures up images of Perry Mason (I know I am dating myself) and other images of tense courtroom drama. Not so much anymore. As the annual court statistics bear out, fewer and fewer cases “go to trial” as motion practice and alternate dispute resolution (e.g., mediation and arbitration) become viable options. Our jury system is an efficient and fair means to resolve disputes, but cost and expediency often mitigate against courtroom drama.
How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?
We live in a community with a rich tradition of philanthropy and caring about the human condition. Are we perfect? No, but there are countless citizens of the ROC that give their time, talent and treasure every day to make this place a better place to live. My sisters and brothers in the legal community actively participate in this ongoing effort by offering counsel and economic support to charities, nonprofit organizations, and those who are underrepresented or unrepresented.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?
I like to garden, cook and, of course, eat. My interests are a perfect combination during the summer/fall months in our region. If I cannot find what I need in my garden, our community offers great spots like the Rochester Public Market or the Brighton Farmers Market to fill the pantry or satisfy a hankering for fresh goodies. We are blessed with much abundance and the beauty of the changing seasons. Take a weekend walk anywhere in the Finger Lakes, I highly recommend it.
