Years in current role: 13.5

What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

One trend I’m closely watching is how zoning and land use regulations are evolving in response to Rochester’s push for housing development and economic revitalization. As the city balances growth with community input and sustainability, we’re seeing increased complexity in navigating approvals and variances. There’s also growing legal focus on adaptive reuse of older buildings, which presents unique challenges in title, environmental compliance, and code interpretation. These shifts are reshaping how we approach real estate deals in our region.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

New attorneys need to pair strong legal fundamentals with practical problem-solving and communication skills. In real estate, understanding how to move deals forward while balancing legal risk is key. Attention to detail is critical but so is being able to explain complex issues clearly to clients, municipalities and other counsel. In today’s fast-moving environment, adaptability and tech literacy are also vital — especially with evolving platforms for due diligence, e-signatures, and virtual closings becoming the norm.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

Many people think real estate law is just about reviewing contracts or closing deals. In reality, it’s a dynamic field that requires strategic thinking, negotiation and deep knowledge of local regulations, zoning and financing structures. Especially in a market like Rochester — where development, revitalization and legacy property issues intersect — real estate law often involves solving complex puzzles that impact neighborhoods and long-term investment outcomes.

How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?

Rochester’s blend of historic character and forward-looking development drives my approach to real estate law. I see my role not just as legal counsel, but as a partner in shaping the region’s growth — whether that’s helping a local business expand, assisting a first-time home buyer, navigating land use for new housing, or preserving a legacy property. The collaborative spirit here inspires me to approach every matter with integrity, practicality, and a focus on long-term impact. It’s rewarding to see legal work translate into visible, positive change across our city.

What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?

An ideal weekend starts with a hike through one of our many beautiful parks, followed by kayaking or just relaxing with family and friends. We try to make time to visit some of the incredible local wineries, breweries or local farm-to-table spots. Western New York offers an unbeatable mix of natural beauty, small-town charm, and local flavor — it’s the perfect reset after a busy week.
