Fence keeps 50-ton boulder from landing on road

The Associated Press//March 10, 2011//

NIAGARA FALLS — A metal fence erected to keep rocks from falling onto a western New York road has done its job in a big way.

Officials say the retaining fence kept a boulder weighing an estimated 50 tons from crashing onto an access road leading to the New York Power Authority’s fishing pier at the Niagara Power Project in .

Wednesday afternoon’s rock slide on a steep embankment sent the large boulder and several smaller rocks into the fence, causing it to bend into the road’s entrance lane. No one was injured.

Authority officials tell the Niagara Gazette that the road will be closed until the rocks can be removed and the fence repaired.

The road is used by pedestrians to access the Niagara River fishing pier and connects to an employee parking area.
