It wasn’t hard to find smiling faces Friday as Monroe County Family Court celebrated National Adoption Day.

They were everywhere — from the 13 children being adopted, to their parents and other family members, court personnel and judges, including the beaming smile of Judge Dandrea L. Ruhlmann, who presided.

The newly adopted children — 12 from foster families and one private adoption — ranged in age from 1 to 17.
National Adoption Day, as noted by Judge Ruhlmann, is a day of promise and hope for 115,000 children in foster care, awaiting permanent homes. The designation of November as Adoption Month raises the national consciousness about adoption.

Judge Ruhlmann said the formal adoption proceeding bears great significance for any child marking the start of his or her “forever family,” as witnessed by many Friday.

“It was truly a celebration,” she added.
