What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?
The essential skills new attorneys need differ based on their specific practice area. From a litigator’s perspective, the most beneficial thing a new attorney can do is to experience the courtroom as often as possible. The skills I gained early on as an Assistant District Attorney helped shape my legal career. In that role I was in court day in and day out and participated in cases that ranged from misdemeanors to serious felonies. It is essential for new attorneys to consistently stand up in court, present arguments and participate in a variety of cases.
What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?
Many people think commercial litigators are always trial, but that’s not true. Today’s practice consists of complex commercial cases, and most are resolved early and outside of court to avoid high costs and risks associated with ligation. Attorneys work hard to find mutually agreeable resolutions quickly and save clients from expensive litigation and legal fees.
How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?
I have had the privilege of practicing law in Rochester for nearly 20 years. The legal community here is tight-knit, and while certain cases can undoubtedly be full of emotion, lawyers in this community always treat each other with dignity and respect. My practice takes me to other areas of the county as well. There are very few legal communities like Rochester.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?
My favorite thing to do is catch a Rochester Red Wings baseball game with a hot dog and cold drink on a perfect summer night.
