What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?
AI continues to be a hot topic. AI is transforming the practice of law, but its integration in one of my focus areas, real estate, presents unique challenges. While AI can streamline document review, contract drafting, and due diligence, it struggles with nuanced interpretation of laws that vary by jurisdiction. In real estate, where transactions involve complex negotiations, evolving regulations, local zoning issues and complex contingencies, AI tools risk oversimplifying critical legal nuances. Additionally, ethical concerns around confidentiality, accountability, and the unauthorized practice of law add layers of complexity. Lawyers must balance efficiency gains with careful oversight to ensure compliance and protect client interests.
What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?
For new attorneys, success hinges on a combination of legal knowledge and a strong set of business and people skills. Lawyers must have the ability to analyze complex facts and interpret and apply case law to solve problems strategically. Clear, persuasive writing and oral advocacy are essential for drafting legal documents, negotiating deals and arguing in court. It is important to be able to communicate in a plain and concise manner to clients. New attorneys need to be able to understand client needs, manage conflict and work well with colleagues and opposing counsel. Having a familiarity with legal research tools, document automation, and AI-driven legal tech is an advantage. Finally, organization is a key skill to manage heavy caseloads, prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?
Weekends, especially in the summer and fall, are the time to enjoy all the outdoor activities in Western New York, including festivals, concerts, water activities on Irondequoit Bay or Lake Ontario, or hiking in one of many parks. There is nothing better than sharing a meal or favorite beverage with family or friends outdoors at a restaurant, brewery or patio. Of course, sports are a highlight. Whether a recreational soccer game with the kids, cheering on our Rochester Red Wings, or attending the Buffalo Bills Training camp are all ideal activities for your weekend.
