Sterling settlement OK’d

By: Daily Record Staff//May 16, 2014

The Monroe County Legislature on May 14 authorized a $7,055,000 settlement in a lawsuit filed against the county by Frank Sterling, who was exonerated in 2010 after he was wrongfully convicted of murder.

Sterling was convicted in 1992 of killing Viola Manville, a 74-year-old Hilton woman. DNA testing later implicated Mark Christie, who is serving a life sentence after a 1994 conviction for the murder of 4-year-old Kali Ann Poulton.

Easton Thompson Kasperek Shiffrin law firm partner Donald M. Thompson, who with the Innocence Project worked for more than 14 years to establish Sterling was innocent of murder, in 2011 received the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers’ Gideon Champion of Justice Award for his work, as well as for his work on other local wrongful conviction cases.
