What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

We’re seeing a rise in couples who live together long term without marrying, often co-owning property or intermingling finances. When these relationships end, the lack of legal structure leaves people vulnerable. We’re encouraging cohabitation agreements — essentially a prenup for unmarried couples — to clarify financial rights and prevent costly disputes. Similarly, blended families in second or third marriages face unique estate planning issues. Without proper planning, state laws may distribute assets in ways that don’t reflect their wishes. These trends highlight the need for proactive legal solutions rooted in planning and communication.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

New attorneys should embrace the learning curve and take advantage of the resources around them — mentorships, CLEs and legal research tools. In family law, mediation is becoming a crucial skill. Joining organizations like the New York State Council on Divorce Mediation can accelerate your growth by offering valuable training, networking and continuing education. Being open, coachable and resourceful are key. You don’t need to know everything on day one, but you do need to know how to learn, and where to turn for help.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

Many people believe they can rely on the internet or AI to understand legal issues, but every family situation is nuanced. Whether it’s divorce, estate planning or probate, online resources can’t account for your personal variables. People often don’t realize how risky it is to make major legal or financial decisions based on generalized advice. Our consultations help clients uncover issues they didn’t even know existed. The reality is: if you’re dealing with marriage, divorce or family wealth, you need tailored legal guidance to protect what matters most.
