Executive Director, JustCause

Years in current role: 8

What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

This year, I’m closely watching how the courts are testing the limits of executive power and the separation of powers — developments that could reshape the legal landscape. At the same time, we’re seeing a troubling national decline in pro bono participation and a loss of federal funding for legal services. That means many people facing serious civil legal issues — like housing, family law or immigration — may go without help. We’re working hard to ensure Rochester defies this trend by mobilizing our legal community to step up and serve.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

As AI transforms legal research and writing, the most crucial skills for new attorneys will be those that require human judgment and connection — especially negotiation, conflict resolution and client communication. These are areas where emotional intelligence, empathy and interpersonal skill can’t be replicated by machines. New lawyers should focus on developing the ability to listen deeply, build trust and navigate conflict effectively — skills that will remain indispensable no matter how advanced the technology becomes.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

One common misconception about pro bono work is that attorneys feel they lack the expertise to help. But JustCause provides robust training, mentorship and ongoing support — no one is left to navigate a case alone. With a wide range of opportunities across many areas of law, our staff works closely with volunteers to match them with matters that align with their comfort level. Whether you’re new to practice or a seasoned attorney, there’s always a way to make a meaningful impact with confidence. Time commitment can be as little as two hours, though most people find it rewarding and come back for more!
