What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?
In our industry (appellate services) we are always keeping a close eye on any rule changes for the courts we work with. There is a continuing trend toward enhanced electronic filing capabilities in all courts, including at the appellate level. We are working with attorneys to make sure they are up to date on process/procedure for every appeal we prepare on their behalf.
What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?
Beyond the legal expertise required for an attorney to be successful in their particular field of law, I think it is crucial to be proficient with current technological capabilities available in the legal industry. Also, interpersonal skills are a must — the ability to communicate effectively is a key to accomplishing your goals in law, business and life.
What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?
Regarding appellate services, a big misconception is that we just “print and file appeals.” Yes, there is that important aspect of what we do in the courts that require hardcopy filings. However, companies like ours offer a wide range of valuable services that are essential for the attorneys we work with. That includes electronic document preparation and review, creating necessary forms/certifications for filing, drafting and formatting of various documents — even legal research and brief writing. This is in addition to the resources and experience we have to navigate through the often-complex process of filing in any court we handle.
How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?
The biggest takeaway I have from working in Rochester my entire career is the incredible level of talent we have here and how devoted our industry leaders are in giving back to the community — whether it be serving on a board or committee — by donating time and treasure.
What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?
During the all-too-short summer season in Western New York, you’ll catch me enjoying as much time as I can with my family and friends. Whether that be a trip to Seabreeze with my wife and kids or hanging out by the pool. Maybe (if time permits) the occasional round of golf at one of many incredible courses we have available in this area.
