What is one legal issue or trend you’re keeping a close eye on this year?

Aside from the economic uncertainty and interest rate environment, one trend I am keeping a close eye on is the digital transformation in real estate transactions. Advancement in technology raises new legal questions regarding data privacy, cybersecurity and enforceability of digital contracts as well as revolutionize transactions to streamline workflow and increase efficiency.

What skills do you think are most crucial for new attorneys entering the field today?

For new attorneys, I think honing your craft and your technical skills are critical, but what helps new attorneys be most effective is developing business acumen and combining knowledge, skill, ability and, over time, experience to help clients make informed decisions that help achieve their goals.

What’s one misconception people often have about your area of law?

The biggest misconception I find with real estate practice is that all real estate contracts are the same and that real estate law is the same across the country. Real estate contracts vary significantly, depending on the type of property, the jurisdiction, the parties involved, and the proposed use of the property. Additionally, real estate practice varies substantively from state to state, and even across the state, which is why it is important to consult with local counsel who are familiar with the particular laws and regulations for the jurisdiction where a property is located.

How does the Rochester community influence your work or professional philosophy?

The Rochester community has a tremendous influence on my work. Rochester is an ever-changing, diverse community and one with a rich history of several businesses that have made their mark not only on the city, but also the world — from Eastman Kodak, Xerox and Bausch & Lomb to Palmer Food Service, Paychex and Wegmans. In addition, Rochester is well known for historical figures like Susan B. Anthony, the social reformer and women’s rights activist, and Frederick Douglass, the social reformer, abolitionist, writer and the most influential leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century. Being a lawyer is about understanding the law, its purpose and how it interacts with morality and society to help advocate effectively for our clients.

What’s your ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Western New York?

An ideal way to spend a weekend in the Finger Lakes or Wester New York region for me is spending time with my wife and our four kids either at a baseball or softball field, visiting a park or hiking, or enjoying a meal at one of the amazing food venues that are available throughout our region.
